The Latin American society organised a food sale to raise money for those affected by an earthquake that struck Ecuador’s north-western coast on 16 April 2016, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale. More than 655 people were killed and 12,492 were injured. The earthquake is reported to have left 29,000 people homeless as a result of the 1,500 buildings destroyed including homes, schools, and hospitals.

The stall was set up outside the Student Union over a two-day period from 28 – 29 April 2016, coinciding with the Global Village event that featured Saudi Arabian, Indonesian, and Afro-Caribbean stalls. There were a small variety of food available to purchase including bunelos, brownies, cake, and nachos teamed with guacamole. All proceeds went straight to the cause. Members of the Latin Society were prepared to discuss and explain the geographical distribution of Ecuador, providing an insight into the country.

The President of the Latin American society, Ivan Torres, said,  “The Ecuadorian embassy contacted Ecuadorian students from different parts of the UK asking for donations to help those affected.”

A Crowd Funder page was set up SOS Ecuador to allow donations, which will be used to increase the capacity of the emergency teams deployed to those areas severely affected by the earthquake. Vital aid will also be provided to those in need and the funds raised will help to cover the cost of supplying medication, food, water, and blankets.

“Some schools have allowed us to put flyers and posters up. We are currently in the process of planning a Latin themed party to raise more money”, Torres continued.

According to Boris Villacres, a member of the society, “The amount raised so far on the Crowd Funder page exceeds £38,000.” SOS Ecuador have set a target to reach £50,000 by 17 May 2016.
