Following the release of his sonically stunning sixth album on Ninja Tune, Bonobo is heading up North to play the iconic Sage on 3rd March. Inhabiting the Gateshead side of the River Tyne like a giant metallic beached whale, slug or a ‘shiny condom’ (as suggested by architectural historian Gavin Stamp) The Sage is a venue that I am yet to visit. Having already welcomed the likes of James Brown, Nick Cave and Morrissey through its doors, I have no doubts about it being the right location for Simon Green’s showcase of Migration. With its blend of mellow electronica, trip hop undertones, intricate beats and live instruments, the soundscape of tracks like ‘Outlier’ and ‘Kerala’ will work wonders with the acoustics of the North East’s most musical monument.

"mellow electronica, trip hop undertones, intricate beats and live instruments"

Migration features notable performances from the likes of Rhye and Nick Murphy (FKA Chet Faker) and it remains unknown whether these vocalists will be accompanying Simon Green on tour. As the live elements of Migration’s composition will be revived on the tour, I would like to think that there will at least be some live vocals.

Hearing the chants of ‘Bambro Koyo Ganda’ in the flesh would certainly be an ethereal experience, but it may be pushing my luck to expect Moroccan collective Innov Gnawa to take to the road on the European leg of Bonobo’s travels. What has been confirmed is that London-based producer Daktyl will be providing the supporting set. A product of the Soundcloud remix era, tracks from Daktyl’s atmospheric debut, Cyclical will merge well with Bonobo’s performance, as both incorporate sounds that simulate the natural world and the music of different cultures.

"an aural and visual journey I cannot wait to undertake"

The last time I saw Bonobo he was playing a bass-heavy DJ set at an after-party at Los Angeles’ FYF Festival. I have no doubt that this evening will be more ambient and profound, and it is an aural and visual journey I cannot wait to undertake.
