Teddy Bear Hospital society to host health fun day

On Saturday, February 20, NUSU’s Teddy Bear Hospital society will be hosting their annual ‘Funday’ at the Centre for Life.

The society aims to reduce childhood anxiety in clinical environments whilst educating children about the importance of other health-related issues.

Volunteers provide fun-filled weekly visits for young children.

On the day, parents are encouraged to bring their children and the children’s teddies, to join in with a selection of healthcare-related activities.

Usually, the society provides five stations for the children to get involved in: a hand washing station, healthy living station, teeth brushing station, sensory station and the doctor’s station.

Melissa Carson, the Teddy Bear Hospitals event coordinator commented that their annual Funday is “a much larger scale of what we normally offer to children at schools, rainbow and beaver groups.”

The event will run from 10am to 4pm and will be open to children of all ages.

Last year the society raised money for two charities, the Great North Children’s Hospital and The Great North Museum. The society will repeat their fundraising efforts for two different charities this year.

Different activities will be on offer specifically for the day, for example: an x-ray station, first aid and ambulance station, safety around medicines station, and an anatomy teddy table, which enables children to learn about how the insides of bodies work.

The team will also be providing scrubs for the children to dress up in.

Last year over 160 children attended the event.

Mellissa said: “the aim of the funday event is to reach more children than we could possibly reach during weekly visits, and also to open up the Teddy Bear Hospital to children of all ages. It’s intended to be a fun and educational saturday, held in the February half term.”

The society intends to provide a comfortable platform for children to communicate their concerns regarding hospital visits and better educate them about what to expect in the future in a fun manner.
